Baker Mayfield trade rumors: Panthers, Seahawks still open to acquiring Browns QB, per report

The quarterback carousel rotates throughout the season, with teams like the Steelers, Browns, Colts, Broncos, Commanders, Falcons and Seahawks all on track to open next season with new starters in the middle. Not to mention teams like the 49ers, Bears and Texans, who are all expected to start with the passers they drafted last year but had on the bench to start the 2021 season.

However, at least one domino has yet to fall in the quarterback market, with Cleveland still having Baker Mayfield on the roster even after trading for Deshaun Watson earlier this off-season. There has been speculation that the Browns could keep Mayfield and let him start while Watson is serving a suspension issued under the Personal Conduct Policy after he was accused of sexual misconduct by more than 20 women, but that seems unlikely given the financial realities involved. involved. , as well as the possible clumsiness in the locker room.

That makes the recent report from The Athletic that neither the Seahawks nor the Carolina Panthers have ruled out Mayfield playing an interesting game at some point this offseason. From Jeff Howe:

The Panthers and Seahawks have expressed interest in the Mayfield acquisition, but the Browns were unwilling to take enough of his fully guaranteed $18,858 million salary. Indeed, some progress had been made in the negotiations between the Browns and Panthers before Carolina traded for quarterback Matt Corral — a move the Panthers felt compelled to make with a QB prospect they still liked dangling out there.

The Panthers and Seahawks are still not ruling out the Mayfield takeover, but they will need the Browns to take on a much larger share of his contract than they have offered so far. It’s unclear how far apart the parties are, but the Browns want their contractual influx to be commensurate with the net worth they get in return.

It’s worth noting that the last time a team was essentially paid to take on a quarterback’s salary was when the Browns got a runoff from the Houston Texans in exchange for taking Brock Osweiler’s $16 million into their books.

But Cleveland took on that entire contract, allowing the Browns to receive an asset in return instead of giving one up. If the Browns are willing to take some of Mayfield’s salary when he moves out, it could boost their returns on this deal. If they insist that the acquisition team pay Mayfield’s full salary, they may have to seize assets to divest him from their pet-sheet. Since opposing teams are reportedly not too keen on the structure of Watson’s contract, they probably won’t be in the mood to help the Browns here, further complicating matters. This is an off-season situation that can drag on to training camp, where it could be injury, rather than compensation, that motivates a team to trade for Mayfield.
