Bears Brass 'overwhelmingly impressed' with Justin Fields' progress

Most national media and fans have remained focused on the Chicago Bears attack around Justin Fields. By doing so, they believe that new GM Ryan Poles and head coach Matt Eberflus have failed in their efforts this off-season. No significant additions to the staff were made except for a third round in Velus Jones and a couple of second-rate free agents in receiver Byron Pringle and center Lucas Patrick. In reality, those people missed the point.

When the new team brass arrived in January, they quickly came to a realization. Before the attack as a whole could be rebuilt, Fields had to be rebuilt as well. In 2021, too many problems cropped up with his overall game. The mechanics and basics were way too sloppy and he struggled to handle the speed and complexity of the NFL defense. So their mission became to tear down the QB and rebuild it from scratch. According to Jeff Hughes of Da Bears Blog, his progress has far exceeded even their most optimistic predictions.

“Since meeting and working with Fields, the new leadership is overwhelmingly impressed† It has already made those mechanical changes and looks good. His mastery of the script in just a few months has enabled him to be a vocal leader both on the field and in the conference rooms. His charisma is infectious – this is his team and the players around him react. The management love everything they’ve seen from Fields since they took over the franchise. But folks, he still has to DO it on Sunday. That’s all that matters.”

Justin Fields will get a lot of help from better scheming.

Eberflus said in a recent interview with Rich Eisen that the Bears hope to protect the young quarterback through heavier use of game action, quick passes and fencing. Thanks to a strong backfield headlined by David Montgomery, the team feel they have a strong foundation for a good running game. If the offensive line can be taken to run the new wide zone system under Luke Getsy, the Bears should be able to run the ball consistently.

That will make Justin Fields’ life much easier. Also don’t forget the additions of Velus Jones Jr. and Trestan Ebner in the design. Jones is said to be one of the best run-after-the-catch receivers in the class, so he’ll be an important weapon in the quick pass game. Ebner was making noise with his ability to catch passes from the backfield at Baylor. So he will be prominent in the screen game.

Again, all indications are that this regime has a plan for their young quarterback. Plans take time to unfold.
