Geno Smith leads sad Seahawks quarterback league

Are they sure they don’t want Baker Mayfield?

As the Seattle Seahawks try to replace Russell Wilson after they traded the Super Bowl-winning quarterback for the Denver Broncos, backup and former Jets QB Geno Smith is the leader in the clubhouse to take over as starter, offensive coordinator said. Shane Waldron on 93.3 KJR radio Thursday.

The other option would be Drew Lock, who came over from Denver to trade with Wilson.

“At the moment, Geno has done such a good job with the transfer” [from 2021]† He was already ahead of Drew there,” Waldron said.

“We still have a long time to go. We are now just in T-shirts and shorts, up against the sky. We still have a long way to go to see where this competition goes.”

This is, of course, the same Geno Smith who was drafted by the Jets to be the starter, but infamously lost his runway after teammate IK Enemkpali punched him in the face and broke his jaw over a dispute over a $600 plane ticket. He’s been out since 2019 the backup in Seattle and signed a new deal this off-season.

Smith started three games for the Seahawks in 2021 with Russell Wilson injured, playing a total of four games. In those 1–2 starts, he averaged just 26 passing attempts and 190 passing yards per game. He finished the season with five touchdowns and one interception, with a solid passer score of 103.0, but the team was extremely hard during that period (26.33 rush attempts per game).

It looks like Seattle is ready to step up to that old-fashioned philosophy under head coach Pete Carroll. They put out a second round at Michigan State who drove Kenneth Walker III back to add to an already packed RB room of Chris Carson and Rashaal Penny. Star wide receiver DK Metcalf has also been the subject of trade rumors throughout the off-season, though he remains with the team.

Last week, Carroll admitted that Smith “automatically leads the way” in the quarterback league with his starting experience. Lock, the other option, flew out of Denver for the past two seasons, racking up 25 touchdown passes to 20 interceptions and a 79.3 passer rating across 21 career starts.

Everyone expected Seattle to add another quarterback (maybe Mayfield or Jimmy Garoppolo), but the longer we go into the off-season, and the more the coaching staff talks about Smith and Lock as the two players in the league, the more it seems like they really go through with it. In a division with Matthew Stafford, Kyler Murray and Kyle Shanahan, good luck with that.
