Sources: Mbappé's future shrouded in mystery

Real Madrid believe Kylian Mbappe will announce a decision on his future this weekend, sources have told ESPN. The uncertainty over the situation is causing “nervousness and confusion” over the club’s chances of signing the Paris Saint-Germain attacker.

According to sources, there is “pessimism” at Madrid about the possible deal, while there is a similar degree of uncertainty at PSG. Earlier this week, sources close to the Ligue 1 champions told ESPN that the club had given up on Mbappe because they thought he was going to Madrid.

However, as Mbappe is expected to announce his final decision in the coming days, the French international has not communicated this to either club.

Madrid – which has known for months that the player has authorized a transfer to the Bernabeu – does not understand his behavior over the past two weeks, sources said.

The club are nervous at this late stage as they have not received confirmation that Mbappe intends to formally accept their offer or remain in Paris.

Both clubs are at a tense standoff as they expect the player to speak publicly this weekend.

In conversation with Kora Plus on Friday, Mbappe’s mother Fayza Lamari confirmed that the player has reached an agreement with both clubs.

“We will not have any new meetings to discuss Mbappe’s future, these meetings are over,” she said. “Now we have reached an agreement with both Real Madrid and PSG and the talks are over, because now it is Kylian who has to choose.

“The two offers, the one from PSG and the one from Real Madrid, are almost identical. At Real, my son will be in control of his image rights. Now we are waiting for his decision… The two offers are not much different.” and we wait for Mbappe to choose what he wants.”

Madrid has been in touch this season with Mbappe’s entourage, who had given President Florentino Perez his word that he would participate as a free agent when his PSG contract expires on June 30.

Sources had told ESPN that the deal was on track and that the Bernabeu signing was considered a given, but that trust has been damaged by the lack of information and public statements from Mbappe in the past two weeks.

At the same time, Madrid understands the uniquely difficult context of Mbappe’s situation, sources said, and that the player has the final say.

The club had not ruled out a belated offer from PSG to change Mbappe’s mind, but were confident that he would keep his word despite the pressure he has faced “at every level” in recent weeks.

In February, ESPN reported that it was PSG’s intention to offer Mbappe a short-term contract extension, as there was a desire in Qatar for him to remain a PSG player during this year’s World Cup.

PSG’s offer is considered significantly higher than Madrid’s.

Sources close to Madrid’s dressing room have also told ESPN they are now feeling more pessimism around Mbappe’s signing.

The club would have preferred the situation not come to a head just days before their Champions League final with Liverpool, but sources said they understood a solution was now inevitable.
