Tesla has reportedly agreed to build a battery and electric vehicle factory in Indonesia, the country’s head of investment said. The comment comes after Musk met with the Indonesian president.
Last week we reported that Tesla was close to a deal for a battery company in Indonesia after another round of talks with representatives of the carmaker and the Indonesian government; it wasn’t the first time rumors arose that Tesla would make a major investment in Indonesia.
In 2020, we reported that Tesla would be in talks with the Indonesian government to build a new nickel venture in the country, which has a strong nickel reserve – nickel is one of the main materials used in the production of cathodes for battery cells. those are going to be electric vehicles. The move came after CEO Elon Musk begged mining companies to increase their nickel production.
We also later found out that Tesla was actually in talks with Indonesia, not just about nickel, but to possibly build a full-battery factory in the country. After a pause in talks, things picked up again earlier this month after Tesla sent a group to Indonesia to talk with the government and Elon Musk met with President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo.
Now, a week later, local news reports that Tesla has “agreed” a deal to build a battery and electric vehicle factory in Indonesia:
Tesla has approved the construction of a battery and electric vehicle factory in an industrial complex in Central Java province, following talks in the state over the weekend between President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo and Tesla chief Elon Musk, Investment Secretary said. Bahlil Lahadalia Wednesday.
Lahadalia did clarify that nothing has been “signed” yet, but he did say it was agreed:
God willing, Tesla will enter Indonesia this year. But I can’t announce the month yet. Just wait, because we haven’t signed an agreement yet. How much investment is still being kept a secret is still waiting. But this is good stuff, great stuff.
He did not go into details of the plan, but a factory for both batteries and electric vehicles was mentioned. Musk previously said Tesla aims to announce locations for new factories before the end of the year.
Electrek’s Take
I would take it with a grain of salt for now. It looks like a good resource but better to be careful until something is signed. It would be a big deal for Tesla, as it would likely come with securing a large supply of nickel.
Indonesia has introduced regulations forcing companies to process the nickel locally – so it’s not such a big leap for them to make the full battery cells locally – but building all-electric vehicles in Indonesia is more surprising, but not impossible.
