We asked, you told us: you would buy the Pixel 6 instead of the Pixel 6a

Google IO 2022 pixel 6a prices

Google unveiled the Pixel 6a at its I/O developer conference last week, delivering a mid-range phone powered by the same Tensor processor found in the Pixel 6 series. Between this level of horsepower, the solid battery size, Google’s software and the IP67 rating, there’s a lot to love here.

Nevertheless, our own Rob Triggs wrote an opinion post suggesting that the Pixel 6a was still a bit overpriced at $449. It comes in at $150 cheaper than the standard Pixel 6, so we asked you if you’d buy the Pixel 6a or splashing a little extra on the vanilla Pixel 6. Here’s how you voted.

Are you going to buy the Pixel 6 or Pixel 6a?

Results

We posted the poll in our opinion piece on May 14 and it drew just over 1,000 votes at the time of writing. The winning choice? Well, 58.68% of respondents said they would buy the Pixel 6 instead of the Pixel 6a.

Comments from readers supporting this view point to the Pixel 6 having a high refresh rate display, more RAM (8GB vs 6GB) and Gorilla Glass Victus. A note also points to the high Pixel 6a price in several markets outside the US. Throw in a 50MP main camera, wireless charging and 18W charging and we can see why the Pixel 6 might be the preferred choice.

On the other hand, 41.32% of readers polled said they’d buy the Pixel 6a instead of the Pixel 6. At least one comment notes that the cheaper $150 price tag outweighs the Pixel 6’s missing features like a 90Hz -screen. After all, you still get five years of security updates, three OS updates, a polished camera experience, and exclusive Pixel software features here.

Comments

  • PhoenixWitti: It doesn’t matter to compete with its own model range. When you compare it to the offerings of other OEMs in the same price range, the 6a is a tough sell.
  • deltatux: I think this phone is for those who would rather save $150 (the gap is wider in other markets) than spend it on features they may or may not even care about. Not everyone cares about high refresh rate screens or a super stellar camera, they just want a good performing phone with a decent camera at a great price and the 6a fits the bill. Not everyone will see that it makes sense to spend the extra $150. If I didn’t want a better camera I would have waited for the 6a instead of the regular 6 tbh.
  • 1981: Years change, prices rise. Nothing cannot stay cheap forever. It’s still a good price. We really need to be concerned about rising food and fuel costs in the future. If this phone was a 2017 flagship, it would have been $799 back then.
  • simp: USD449 is still not that bad when you look at the SGD and AUD prices. Even if they include local taxes, the markup on currency conversion makes the 6a a non-starter. The situation gets even worse when the 4a was so much cheaper even after currency conversion 2 years ago (compared to the prices of 4a with 6a here because 5a was only available in US and JP).
  • Kira: No, but the Pixel 6 is a bit too cheaper, so it seems the Pixel 6a is a bit expensive.
  • Robert Pearson: The pixel 4a for $349 was the perfect price. Kind of sad to see such an increase but understand based on the features.
  • Brian Simmons: Ultimately, I think we’ll see the street price of the P6a drop to $399 within 3 months of release, as most previous “overpriced” Pixel phones have done. Historically, Google priced the Pixel a bit on the high side and then was forced to cut the price after the initial surge was over. Normally, the A-series phones are priced right from the start and the regular phones overpriced, but Google swapped that out this year. The P6/P6 Pro was immune to this “normal” price break because they were priced correctly from the start, but I think we’ll see it on the P6a.
  • 🇦🇺Marshall: Hmm, 60Hz screen, GG3, 18w charging…you can definitely see where corners have been cut to squeeze the Tensor in. The launch price for this phone puts it dangerously close to the Galaxy A73 5G… which certainly gets a performance hit with its SD778G, but is a much more balanced device on the spec sheet.
