Good news for YouTube Music listeningers! A compatible Wear OS app is finally available, so you can take your playlists with you wherever you go.
Google announced in a user community message that YouTube Music is finally a standalone app. This week, the company begins rolling out the ability to stream YouTube Music over LTE and Wi-Fi† No more carrying your phone in your back pocket to access your YouTube Music playlists or pre-download the music you want to listen to on the go. All you need is an internet connection on the watch itself.
This standalone version of YouTube Music is the first smartwatch app for the streaming service after that brutally replaced Google Play Music end of 2020. Samsung had announced in advance this opportunity earlier this year for its flagship smartwatch, the galaxy watch 4which is currently one of our favorite Android watches.
If you’re a YouTube Music Premium subscriber, you’ll have access to the service’s entire streaming library, plus ready-made playlists. You don’t have to put up with any ads either, and the app comes with a Smart Downloads feature to make sure the latest music syncs to your watch when it’s back over Wi-Fi. YouTube Music also starts collecting new playlists based on your history as you keep listening.
If you’re already using a Wear OS smartwatch, you can access the new YouTube Music tile. The tile is like a quick launch remote for recently played playlists. You can also browse the main page of the YouTube Music app from your watch.

Tiles work like widgets, where you can place it in its own screen space to swipe at it when you’re ready to listen. Music apps like Spotify offer a similar tile that remains embedded in the Wear OS interface, so you can go ahead and start the music whether or not you have headphones on.
