Google finally remembers to update the first-generation Nest Hub with its new app drawer

Could it lead to that rumored detachable model?

We’ll wait until next year to find out that the tablet teased at Google I/O last week is in fact a detachable Nest Hub, which is rumored to be perfect for both gaming and smart home automation. That said, if you own a first-generation Nest Hub display, you don’t have to wait to get some tablet-like improvements on your gadget. A few months after adding an app drawer to the most recent Hub, Google has returned to bring the same feature to the original model.

As noted by 9to5Google, first-generation Nest Hub owners enrolled in the Preview program are getting a new update that adds an app launcher to the home screen. It’s exactly what we saw of the 2nd-generation units in October, although that upgrade left the original model — originally marketed as the “Google Home Hub” — untouched. If this beta launch has anything to offer, that looks set to change soon.

Once your device has been updated, you can launch any app on the Hub by swiping up from the bottom of the screen. It’s unchanged from the experience that first rolled out last fall and offers app suggestions along with a link to all the services installed on the Nest Hub.

As part of this beta firmware update, Google has also added a “Fuchsia Version” number to the settings, as well as a new Bluetooth menu of devices that were previously paired with the Hub.

We haven’t seen a new Nest Hub model since the 2nd-gen sleep-tracking model launched last year, but recent rumors have suggested a detachable model with Android will be coming soon. Google showed a Tensor-powered tablet at I/O that seemed to fit, right down to the white border that matches all other Nest Hub products. If the company is combining its smart displays with tablets, adding an app drawer to the user interface makes perfect sense.
