Each day of the 2022 baseball season, I look at the list of scheduled starting pitchers for today and tomorrow and rank their matchups for your fantasy baseball streams.
There’s a lot to it and you can hang out with me on Twitch.tv/pitcherlist to talk about the specific ranks as I make them every weekday morning from 9am-11am ET. If you have any questions for these ranks, ask them during the morning Twitch AMA. Those are my business hours, as I generally don’t answer comments on the site.
There are four levels in this ranking with 12 teamers in mind:
Automatic start – Just do it. Don’t think too much about this, start the man.
Likely Begin – I’ll probably start with these weapons, although I recognize there’s more risk than we’d like. Either it’s a tough matchup for a good pitcher or a weak lineup for a volatile arm.
Questionable start – There are situations where I would take the chance, either with a strong enough advantage on the skill side, or a bad attack that could benefit a pitcher.
Do not start – The reward is not worth the risk. Do not do it.
Obviously there will be circumstances where pitchers will have to switch between teams specifically for your situation and these new levels should be a little more helpful than last year’s regular table.
Keep in mind that streaming is far from perfect. In fact, if they train more than half the time, I would consider it a success. These matchup rankings and streamer picks will be very different from the actual results throughout the year, so please feel sorry for the scathing comments and tweets. I’m just trying to help!
Make sure to read the comments if you’re wondering why I prefer certain pitchers over others – I won’t reach everyone and hopefully answer the questions you have.
There is a second table for it tomorrow also starting pitcher matchups so everyone can get a jump on their nighttime pick-ups. Please note that these matchups are subject to change, and there shall are times when I have the wrong pitcher. Thank you for your future understanding.
Finally, here are my streaming picks of the day, and keep in mind I have to choose a streamer every day† those marked in Vegetable are in the second level and I would go anywhere with them. The most common are those in Yellow in the third level and should be decent if you are looking for something on a particular day. Finally, those are Red are that me real do not want to start (after all, they are labeled as “Do Not Start”) but have no other choice. Don’t stream these guys until you’re really desperate. A streaming choice is defined as ‘set in 20% or less leagues’, which means: real highlights the point that I would be happy if more than 50% of these worked. I could do the whole sub for 30/40%, but there’s no fun in that. You can use the rankings to realize who that pick would be.
(opener) – Indicates that a pitcher is opened for that day and that the listed pitcher is following the opener.
While I’m making my rankings, I thought it would be helpful to show a table of how we rank violations. Dave Swan doing a incredible task of presenting future SP matchups every 2-3 weeks in this article, and I chose to use his offense ranks to share with all of you here:
Swan’s offensive early in the season
I’m sure it will change over the year + there are differences to be made about teams vs LHP or RHP but it’s a great overall table that you all need to keep in mind.
Okay, let’s go there.
2022 Streamer record: 27-15
Today’s Starting Pitcher Ranking
- It’s an odd top-flight on Friday as there is no clear number 1 game. I am incredibly excited Robbie Ray’s recent start (despite the 5 ER) as it had a 94+ mph speed and excellent north-south command on heaters and sliders… but it’s the Sawx and it’s unclear if those improvements will last.
- That means Scuba pull is rewarded for his incredible start to 2022 with the #1 spot against the Guardians. You have this Tarik.
- Some may want it to be Nestor Cortes Jr. and while I understand he wrecked the White Sox last time, I won’t ignore their ability to hit left-handers. Here it is wrong about this one.
- It’s hard not to feel encouraged by Eric Lauer’s beginning of the year and even his last start where he was 94.5 mph on his heater, or Charlie Morton’s most recent outing where he looked like the ace of yore. Start them both and expect continued success.
- In the second level, I understand if some feel Julius Uria is a little high against the Phillies. Despite the heater not coming in as hot as previous seasons, it still locates well and the curveball is a plus that will keep him earning his CSW points. I have no hesitation here.
- like Uriah, Sean Manaea and Trevor Rogers his solid arms with questionable matchups. I believe the odds are in your favor to let them fly, with strikeout potential, even if the proportions aren’t flawless.
- we have a few Toby poor in the second level with excellent matchups. Adam Wainwright is a clear game against the Pirates, while Hyun Jin Ryu makes his second start back from the IL and gets a cozy date with the Reds.
- Then there’s our streaming pick of the day, Chase Silseth. He packs a 60-mph heater and a snorting splitter that allowed him to cruise through six frames during his debut against Oakland last week. He gets them a second time and I don’t see why it couldn’t be more of the same. I would pick him up before this start.
- The backup streamer is: Jakob Junis if he leads from the third row. The Padres have struggled massively against right-handers this year, while Junis has consistently been five-man with the Giants defense behind him, with the best slider I’ve seen from him in a long time. He is a solid player for the weekend.
- After conceding seven runs to the Nationals, Christian Xavier isn’t as much of a lock as you’d like him to be against a Rangers squad that recently beat the Angels. It could definitely work, I’m just not as confident as I’d like to be.
- At the bottom of the rankings is a quartet of terrible matchups that could go either way. Paul Blackburn and Martin Perez are each on one Vargas rule and came out on top despite their opponents. Carlos Carrasco is forced to endure Coors, and louis castle gets the Jays in his third outing of the season. I wonder if Castillo’s ability to shake off rust could tip the scales in his favor.
- Also here is Kyle Hendriks, which seems like a great game against the Sneks, but naturally a cherry bomb because his command often faltered this season.
- In the bottom row you could do worse than Humberto Castellanos against the Cubs, as he has been passable against weak opponents over the past month.
- Ranger Suarez still has no change despite his recent success and a date with the Dodgers feels like a disaster waiting to happen.
- I’m excited to find out what we’re seeing from Daniel Lynch- Will he keep making strides with his high stove and sniffable slider or will the dangerous Twins bats ruin his day?
- And finally, Aaron Civale has tinkered with its arsenal to include more cutters and curveballs. I think the long-term approach is working and we could see it kicking off when he faces the humble Tigers on Friday.
- By the way, it is awful weather in Colorado today, which means: Carlos Carrasco and German Marquez maybe their game will be postponed today. It could be a doubleheader on Saturday.

Ranking for tomorrow’s starting pitchers
- Look at that big top class for Saturday, hopefully with plenty of arms to lead you to an H2H win. Despite the Padres performing better against left-handed pitching and Rodón’s blast last weekend, I’m still leading with him as number 1 piece. His speed is still intact and considering his health he is a Top 5 SP in fantasy.
- He’s a bit of a cherry bomb† but Frankie Montas settled against the Angels last weekend to span twelve innings over six innings. He can do it again.
- At the bottom of the level, Aaron Nolac and Louis Severino were tough decisions to place in the top lane. I love Nola and although he survived the last start against the Dodgers, it’s another pitch I’m not looking forward to.
- As regards louis severino, I believe his breakers come alive and the White Sox are bad at right-handers. You should be good here.
- The second tier is a short one, though you might be able to hold on to both for a weekend stream. Michael Lorenzo has shown the ability to go 6+ frames this year and is getting a soft match up against the athletics. Sign me up.
- You can also find the streaming choice of the day here Alex Faedo, whose slider has delivered a Swinging Strike rate of 27% this year. I’d let him roll with it against the humble Guardians lineup (and possibly a second time next week).
- In the third layer, Garrett Whitlock is a solid game against the Mariners. I wanted to see him perform at a high level for a bit longer before I start him confident + the Mariners are a dangerous lineup. Still, I see more than most put him in their lineup.
- Kyle Bradish is armed with a fantastic slider and a fastball. I’m afraid it has a bit too much cut action (it reminds me of Corbin Burnes’ 2019 fastball). It’s a bit of a coin flip with a match-up against the Rays, though it’s very tempting to dangle his eleven strikeout game right in front of our eyes.
- don’t overlook Madison Bumgarner as a streaming option against the Cubs – he is a Toby with a decent matchup. It’s what they do.
- I’m excited to watch Matthew Liberatore’s Saturday night MLB debut and while I normally say to avoid debuts, it’s the Pirates. I think it’s okay to pick it up and let it roll and take it from there.
- How willing are you to drive? Jose Quintana’s Vargas rule† What about Justin Steelehigh-wiff night last time? These are tough decisions and I’m leaning on the couch here, but I can understand some wanting to seize the opportunity.
- There is also Jon Gray as he faces the mighty Astros. The results weren’t great, but he simply had the best slider we’ve seen from him in ages resulting in over 50% CSW and 11 gizmos on the sweeper night. It could lead him to another 8+ strikeout game.
- In the bottom tier it’s a bunch of decent arms with terrible matchups, leading with Chris Flexen. He is a Toby who just hit a wall and the Red Sox feel a little too risky for my blood.
- There’s some intrigue in it Mitch White, but he’s not stretched as a starter and I imagine this is a bullpen game for the Dodgers.
