What you need to know
- Google Photos has picked up a few updates, both on Android and the web.
- You can now delete a photo directly from an album on Android.
- A new date overlay has been added to the desktop version.
While Google Photos has been a handy service for managing tons of photos and videos, it does have some annoying quirks, like the lack of an easy way to delete a file from an album. A new update finally fixes that anomaly.
As noted by the founder of Android Police Artem RussakovskiicWith Google Photos on Android, you can now delete a photo directly from an album. The “move to trash” button is the last option in the action bar, which is displayed in an info sheet that can be accessed by swiping up.
Before this update, you could only delete a file from an album, but not completely. To do this, you must first find it in a mountain of media files before discarding items you want to remove from your library.
It’s a much-needed feature, especially for Android users, and its arrival should provide some relief. However, there is a big catch. The delete button is only available for private albums, meaning you still have to go through the old tedious method of deleting a file from a shared album.
On the other hand, the iOS version of the app already allows users to delete photos from both private and shared albums. It’s unclear why Google has waited so long to add the button to one of the best photo editing apps for Android, given that it’s already available on iOS and the web. Despite the late arrival it is still a welcome change.
Another handy update is the new Photos on the web date overlay, which appears in the top left corner when you scroll through the Photos tab, per 9to5Google. The overlay indicates when a particular photo or video was taken: “today”, “yesterday” or earlier. Older dates are marked as such.
The location also appears at the bottom of the action bar when you get the info sheet. It is located directly above the image metadata and indicates where an image was created.
The new updates are the latest improvements Google has pushed to the Photos service. In March, Photos got a ton of new features across all platforms, including new methods for separately managing files on the device and images stored separately in the cloud.
